Where Are They Now? – Roger Paul

Roger Paul has done it all for the Old Haileybury Football Club being a captain, coach, President, 200-game player, life member, six times best and fairest winner and is still doing plenty around the club today! “Pauly” had a fierce competitive streak during his playing days and a natural ability to burst through packs and emerge with ball in hand. Roger’s fiery and fair reputation was well known through the league, his hard-hitting bumps leaving opponents on high alert and collarbones wary. In 1977, the youthful Paul assumed the captaincy role with aplomb where he continued his on-field dominance running through the centre.

Roger’s on-field talents would be missed partially in the late-1970’s due to leg injuries. During this period, the usually robust Pauly only managed 20 games in three years. In 1982, Roger took on the onerous role of captain-coach of the senior team in the club’s last year at Keysborough. Managing to keep the Bloods in C Grade was no mean feat.

In 1983 Roger went into premature retirement until Andrew Langford-Jones’ ruse that added another four years to his career and a few Best and Fairest’s into the cabinet. His final retirement came in 1988 where he concluded a decorated VAFA career. Some of Roger Paul’s achievements are as follows:
– 200 games (198 games in the 1sts)
– Member OHAFC Team of the Century
– 6x Best and Fairest (1974, 1975, 1978, 1983, 1985 and 1986)
– Honorary Life Membership (1984)
– 1sts Captain (1977-79, 1981-83)
– VAFA Representative (1978, 1986-87)
– VAFA Certificate of Merit

Roger off the field is a proud supporter of the club. His two boys, James and Will, are currently playing senior football and it would be rare to not see or hear Roger on the fence. Furthermore, Roger is a regular at both Tuesday and Thursday training always willing to lend a hand wherever needed. Throughout his time at the Old Haileybury Football Club his wife Bronny was around supporting as she still is today. Roger Paul is currently the owner and Principal of Financial Coaching Pty Ltd who are a generous sponsor of the club.
